Yesterday; If I Only Had Yesterday
Dr. James Spinnati
The wealthiest spot on this planet is not the oil fields of Kuwait, Iraq or Saudi Arabia. Neither is it the gold and diamond mines of South Africa, the uranium mines of the Soviet Union or the silver mines of Africa. Though it may surprise you, the richest deposits on our planet lie just a few blocks from your house. They rest in your local cemetery. Buried beneath the soil within the walls of those sacred grounds are dreams that never came to pass, songs that were never sung, books that were never written or read, paintings that never filled a canvas, ideas that were never shared, visions that never became reality, inventions that were never designed, plans that never went beyond the drawing board of the mind, love that was never displayed and purposes that were never fulfilled. Our graveyards are filled, with potential that remained just that; potential.
Po is elusive; oh you want to know what Po is? Po is potential. I have heard it hundreds of times, “Jim they have so much potential to really make a difference in the Lord and this world.” You see Po without Go equals zero. Dreams and visions discarded amount to nothing and that is what many are doing in their earthly walk. They talk the talk but they do not walk the walk. They are doing nothing! Remember they have plenty of time; they say to themselves almost daily, “Tomorrow I will”; yet tomorrow never comes. Tomorrow is a “planet” that is out there somewhere in the unseen universe that beckons them only in a fleeting thought. It is imagined momentarily but never striven for. It gives one a potential to “dream” but never to obtain.
Why have some failed to achieve? Perhaps during their youth many of them had dreams, desires, plans and aspirations. Yet today they are lost in a maze of substance abuse, alcoholism, purposelessness, poorly chosen friends and the dark days that have long since passed in their life. They “camp” in a morbid place called yesterday. Yesterday is where they morn what could have been. And yet the parent that beat them and belittled them; the one who called them stupid and verbally degraded them is still beating them and belittling them even though they have since passed on because they refuse to move on. The bully that made their past life miserable is still making their life miserable because their mind is fixated on yesterday. The old Burt Bacherach song speaks to their malaise; saying “A fool will lose tomorrow reaching back for yesterday.” Therefore their lives are aimless and many of their decisions are haphazard at best. What could have been has become what should have been. The wealth of dreams has been dashed by the poverty of discouragement. They are likened unto Israel who had their sins pushed forward year after year and yet when the One who came who could take away their sins they rejected Him and continued to live in spiritual poverty!
Why am I writing this? I’m writing these words because you are above ground. Those who occupy the cemetery plots of this world can never see their earthly dreams and passions come to reality. Therefore, it is time that you quit whining and start winning. Begin to live your life to the fullest. Quit living in the past and wallowing in the circumstances of days gone by. It is time to get up and get going. This is your day to make a difference in the world in which you live. It is a time to fulfill your dreams and aspirations. Listen, this can’t be accomplished by sitting and mopping. It only comes to realization when one starts doing! Live life for today and seek the brightest star. And may I suggest that the brightest star in all creation is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He is the bright and morning star. He is the one that can fill a God size hole that wealth, prestige, and prominence never will. He can heal your life and your family. He can take the trials and tribulation that mire your life and dissolve any disturbance that rocks your world. You see; Jesus IS the answer and always has been. Make Him number one in your life and then see your potential come to fruition.
